7 CV Mistakes That Get You Rejected Before a Human Reads It

Most rejected CVs do not belong to unqualified candidates. They belong to people who could do the job well, but whose CV never gave a recruiter or an ATS a reason to find out. The mistakes below are the ones we see most often, and every one of them is fixable in an afternoon.

    1. Listing Duties Instead of Achievements

"Responsible for managing a sales team" tells a recruiter what your job was. It does not tell them whether you were good at it. Every bullet point should answer the question "so what happened because of this?" Compare "Responsible for managing a sales team" with "Managed a team of 6, growing quarterly revenue by 18% over two years." The second version is the one that gets remembered.

    2. No Quantified Results

Numbers are the fastest way to signal credibility on a CV. Revenue, percentages, team size, timelines, budget, client counts, error rates reduced, tickets resolved: almost every role has something that can be measured. If you genuinely cannot quantify an achievement, describe the scope and impact as specifically as possible instead of leaving it vague.

    3. Sending the Same CV to Every Job

A generic CV can be a strong CV in isolation and still underperform, because it is not speaking directly to the job description in front of it. Recruiters and ATS systems are both looking for alignment between what the posting asks for and what your CV emphasizes. Tailoring does not mean rewriting the whole document each time; it means adjusting your summary, reordering bullet points by relevance, and matching the language of the posting where it genuinely applies.

    4. Weak or Missing Summary

The top third of a CV gets the most attention, and a summary that reads like a generic mission statement wastes that space. "Hardworking professional seeking new opportunities" tells a reader nothing. A strong summary states your role, years of experience, one or two standout achievements, and the kind of position you are targeting, in three or four sentences.

    5. Inconsistent Formatting

Mismatched fonts, inconsistent date formats, uneven spacing, and bullet points that shift between past and present tense all signal a lack of attention to detail, which is exactly the impression you do not want to give before anyone reads a word of your experience. Formatting consistency is one of the fastest things a recruiter notices, often before the content itself.

    6. Burying the Most Relevant Experience

Strict reverse-chronological order is the safest default, but it can work against you if your most relevant experience is two jobs back and buried under a less relevant recent role. In cases like this, a short, well-placed summary at the top that immediately signals your relevant expertise helps a reader find the connection faster, without needing to restructure your entire work history.

    7. Ignoring the Keywords in the Job Description

This is the mistake that costs candidates the most invisibly, because it happens before a human ever opens the file. Applicant Tracking Systems score CVs against the language of the job posting, and a CV that describes the right experience using different words than the posting can score lower than a weaker CV that happens to match the phrasing more closely. Read the posting closely, pull out the specific skills, tools, and qualifications it names, and make sure your CV reflects that exact language wherever it is genuinely true.

    The Bottom Line

None of these seven mistakes require more experience or a different career to fix. They require rebuilding how the experience you already have gets presented, both to the person reading it and to the software that decides whether they see it at all.
